In 1986, Barnabas began as an outreach effort of St. Michael's church. Soon thereafter, the Ministerial Alliance responded and other churches and concerned citizens joined in supporting the endeavor. What began as small group effort to help those in need has evolved into today's Barnabas Center – the safety net provider for Nassau County citizens in crisis.

During the last few years, Barnabas has experienced an extraordinary increase in demand for all five of our service programs. Last year Barnabas served over 5,000 individuals, 40% of them being children. Over the past five years, program expenditures have almost tripled – from $1 million to $3 million. Necessary program growth has resulted in Barnabas programs being housed in crowded, separate locations.

The Board of Directors has diligently explored ways to consolidate spaces and ensure efficient , cost effective delivery of services to meet the needs of our community.

We are pleased to announce our recent purchase of a building to renovate for the consolidation of all Barnabas programs, at 1303 Jasmine Street, Fernandina Beach. When renovation is completed later this summer, the new Barnabas Center will feature:

Expansion of the Crisis Assistance -Program providing more integrated and
comprehensive service to individuals and families in crisis

Food Pantry Expansion - doubling current space, including the addition of walk-in
refrigerator and freezer, allowing us to expand fresh/frozen food storage capability

Health Center - tripling current medical and dental program spaces, allowing comprehensive
health care: dental, preventative and primary medical, and mental health services

Additional Administrative Space -a large conference room and learning center to
enhance operational capacity

Barnabas Center services are funded by private donations, churches, foundations, and people like you – who help us to carry out our mission. Your generosity has brought us such a great distance since 1986.
